GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

We just got back from the 10 day Greece trip for our honeymoon and I'm already dying to go back. We had never booked a guided tour vacation before, but booking with Affordable World made everything so easy. We didn't have to research hotels, figure out transportation, etc. It was so nice to have our ferry tickets already booked for us and a spacious, temperature-controlled coach bus to take us everywhere we needed to go (within the tour - of course, we were responsible for transportation for anything we did on our own). We flew Turkish Airlines and were pleasantly surprised. The flight is long, which is to be expected, and it's a little annoying that it's cheaper to fly an hour and a half PAST Athens to Istanbul, and then have to fly BACK to Athens on a second flight, but it was fine. They provide you with headphones, unlimited new movies, three full meals, drinks, slippers/socks, eye masks, ear plugs, etc. Not a bad way to travel a long distance! All of the hotels were wonderful. We stayed at the President Hotel in Athens. The room was nothing special, but we aren't really the type of people to spend much time in our room on vacation anyway. The pool and rooftop bar/restaurant were great! Good drinks and even better views. The breakfast is pretty much the same everywhere we went - a traditional buffet with some Greek and European twists. It also was nothing special, but it was extremely convenient and did the trick filling us up before the day's activities. We were pleasantly surprised with everything in Athens. We did not do the Cape Sounion tour and based on the other's opinions who did, it sounds like we made the right choice. It is right after a very long, busy morning touring the Acropolis and city. We chose to climb Mount Lycabettus instead and it was so worth it. The views were incredible. Make sure you go to Plaka at some point for dinner/shopping and visit the second oldest bar in Europe, Brettos. We had no issues with the ferries. It was a little chaotic with all of the people, but that's to be expected I think. The time flies by and then you are in the islands! First up was Mykonos. The Alkistis Hotel was amazing! It was so picturesque and each room had a private balcony overlooking the Aegean Sea. There was also a beach at the base of the property, but you do have to pay for chairs/umbrellas. The walking tour in Mykonos was good, but brief - it was really more of a time-killer until we were able to check into our hotel. I recommend taking some time to go back into town to really explore on your own and try some of the different restaurants. In Santorini, we stayed at the Costa Grand Resort & Spa - it had its own private area on the Kamari Black Sand Beach. Very cool! It's a brand new hotel and when Affordable World booked us, they didn't realize it was a 5-star hotel, so that was a pleasant surprise! Beautiful property and beautiful rooms. A very short walk into Kamari where there are lots of restaurants to choose from, although I recommend venturing out a bit for food - the restaurants there are very Americanized in my opinion. Instead of doing the short walking tour with the group from Fira to Imerovigli, my husband and I chose to wake up early, catch a cab to Oia and do the 11 km hike from Oia to Fira. We timed it perfectly so that we were able to catch up with the group in Fira and take the bus back with them to the hotel. It's a long hike (about 7 miles), but it was SO worth it. One of the highlights of the trip for sure - such breathtaking views. The tour guide, Maria, was helpful in giving us tips for making the hike most efficient. We also did the Sunset Caldera Sailing catamaran - definitely recommend! Towards the end, it was a little windy and bumpy, but we didn't mind. The wine was flowing and my husband and I took the opportunity to steal a moment away to ourselves and sit at the front of the boat on the way back to the port while everyone else sat inside avoiding getting wet from the sea sprays. To go back from Santorini to Athens for our last night, we chose to upgrade to the flight and it was the best decision we made for the whole trip. Not only is the flight only about 40 minutes, as opposed to a 6-8 hour ferry, which gave us a full last night in Athens to enjoy an authentic meal, another drink at Brettos, and some gelato, but the last day in Santorini, there were high wind alerts and concerns for a "medicane" (a Mediterranean hurricane), so the ferries were not running that day. Everyone else in our group had to book last minute flights, which were twice as much as what we had paid and got them back into Athens about 6 hours after us. Just a couple of cons, or at least things to note: There ARE a lot of steps at the Alkistis Hotel in Mykonos, which was a little bit of a pain with our luggage, but the hotel staff can take it up to your room for you if you're willing to wait a little bit, and we are pretty able-bodied people, so the stairs didn't bother us. It made for better views that way. There were a couple of times when the bus was running late to take us to the airport, once in Santorini and once in Athens, which stressed us out a little bit that we might miss our flights, but after calling the tour guides, the bus showed up shortly after and we had plenty of time to make the flight. As much as we LOVED the catamaran, I will say that the food could be a little better. The sides were pretty good, but the meat was incredibly dark and fatty - we ended up going out for a whole new dinner when we got back to our hotel. And finally, we were with a group of about 25 people, and this is absolutely at no fault of Affordable World because you know this going into it when you book a group guided tour vacation, but you don't get to pick the people you're with, and although they were all fine, some people just work at a totally different (slower) pace than we do and there really isn't anything you can do about it, except wait. But to be honest, that's kind of true of the country of Greece as a whole - nobody seems to be in much of a hurry there :) So just slow down and enjoy the moment and the unbelievable views! All in all, a PERFECT honeymoon! And I would definitely book with Affordable World again.

GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

This is my second vacation purchased thru Affordable World. You can't go wrong with impeccable customer service! MY kids and I enjoyed the ruins in Athens and the Island of Delos. I have some breathtaking pictures in Cape Sounion. Mykonos was beautiful but I LOVED Santorini the most! Will probably return to Greece to stay in Santorini again and visit other islands such as Crete. Affordable World makes traveling with kids a breeze because they plan everything for you - you just have to show up! You even get some quality time to yourself which is great. I definitely recommend Affordable World and this Greek Island trip!

GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

Just returned from 4/19 Greece tour. Overall a wonderful trip to a very beautiful and welcoming country! Id definitely travel with Affordable World again with modifications. One-pack light. You will be schlepping your luggage from 4 hotels and three ferries yourself! I brought one large suitcase, a smaller carry on and a tote. Some of the carrying was long and treacherous as in boarding ferries. Two-be sure you are in great physical shape. Be very careful of rocks and slippery walkways. A lady on our tour fell at Accropolos and broke her arm! Three-wear your patience pants. You will be waiting in line to check in these hotels, waiting while guides get tickets that could have heen bought in advance, and waiting to enter and exit ferries. The breakfasts provided with tour were excellent. Bring bottle for water to take on various tours. We were thirsty the entire time. All in all I loved this tour! It is well worth the price. ??????

GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

We took this trip for my husband’s 50th and for our wedding anniversary. It was very affordable and relaxing and we highly recommend. Here are our MUST tips and our detailed tips: - Upgrade ferries - Upgrade hotel in Santorini - Do the Caldera Sunset Cruise - Buses in Santorini look like tour buses but have Greek letters and they are not on schedule in the off season - ALWAYS BRING WATER. You can’t drink the water on the islands so you need to ALWAYS have bottled water with you. You can buy it anywhere so just do it. Day 1: The first day you have to explore. The hotel takes your passports which is scary but I think ok. We did not upgrade for any hotels and the hotel wasn’t far from downtown and there were shops and restaurants within walking distance. Day 2: You start early with a terrific tour of the city. Idea in Athens were excellent. We did the Cape Sounio tour and I would not recommend. It’s immediately after you get back from the city tour and it’s a 45 minute ride to see more ruins that aren’t super impressive. It was nice and I don’t regret going but I wouldn’t recommend. Day 3: VERY early ride to Mykonos on a four hour ferry. Highly recommend upgrading as you will be more comfortable and have the option to recline your seats which you otherwise don’t have. Immediately you are taken on a tour of Mykonos. Our guide here was terrible and was very difficult to understand when he did speak which was infrequent. The other guide, Sabina, was supposedly excellent and very chatty. We stayed at the San Marcos Hotel and it was awesome! Free shuttle To and from city center, the rooms were fantastic, and Alex was the best bartender. Ask for a calypso. Day 4: We did the Delos tour and the guide there was excellent. Otherwise it’s a free day. Delos is the religious and cultural center of the Cyclades so it’s pretty neat. We would have liked more time on Mykonos. It was a bit touristy but if you went off the beaten path it was really incredible. Two days did not do it justice. Day 5: Off to Santorini which is a 2 hour ride. Our hotel was beautiful but the Santo Miramare is very far from Thira and there are NO shuttles. It’s super expensive to get around. I would HIGHLY recommend that you upgrade for Santorini hotels because you can walk to the city and that saves you the money you would likely spend on transportation and cuts down on water time waiting for buses and taxis. Day 6: Santorini walking tour was awesome and chows you the coast. Great photos and terrific guide. We did the Sunset Caldera Cruise and it was probably the highlight of the entire trip. So fun and beautiful. The crew was incredible. The sunset over Oia is so worth it. Day 7: This was our free day and it was spent mostly waiting for buses. Which we missed bc they look like tour buses and don’t stop unless you flag them down. The buses are BERY off schedule unless it’s peak season. If you rent a car do it through the hotel bc otherwise you need an international license. We ended up taxiing to Thira, hiking to Imerovigli (all up hill), and then bussing to Oia where we saw the sunset and did some shopping. Day 8: Check out is at 12 and if you upgrade to fly you leave at 1 and if you are taking the 8 hour ferry to Athens you leave at 2. Because we were so far we couldn’t do anything outside the resort today. Day 9: you have about half a day at your original hotel in Athens and then it’s off to the airport.

GREEK ISLAND ESCAPE

My husband and I just returned from our trip and it was wonderful! I upgraded all hotels and that was the right move, because they were all centrally located and beautiful! Breakfast buffets in all of them were outstanding. We did the city tour and Cape Sounion in Athens, which were very good. We did the Delos tour in Mykonos, not to be missed. Climb to the top of the mountain for a breathtaking view. We did our own catamaran sailing trip in Santorini and hired a guide to drive us around the entire island as well. Worth every cent. Important tip: take the plane ride back from Santorini to Athens. The ferry takes 8 hours. This way, we had from 6pm until the next day to see more of Athens. Thanks Affordable World!
