A Day of Sightseeing in Santorini, Greece

Aug 01, 2023

Santorini is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 150 miles southeast of Greece’s mainland. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece, Santorini draws millions of visitors every year who marvel at its stunning natural beauty, including white-washed homes and buildings dotting cliffs around the caldera and blue-domed churches tucked into the island’s hillsides. Here’s what to see during a day of sightseeing in Santorini.

Explore the archaeological site of Akrotiri. This is a well-preserved Minoan city consisting of the ruins of a Minoan Bronze Age settlement, dating to the 17th century BC. The city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC. This volcanic eruption earned the town the nickname, “Prehistoric Pompeii”. The well preserved attractions include ruined 2-story houses and shops, large earthen pots, remnants of a sophisticated drainage system, and photos of the buildings’ frescoes, the originals of which are displayed in Athens and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira.

One of Santorini’s most beautiful and traditional villages, Megalochori fringes the island’s caldera cliffs just south of Thira. A cluster of sugar-cube Cycladic houses, cobbled lanes and neo-classical buildings, this tiny gem is dotted with several of Santorini’s trademark churches — bright white chapels topped with turquoise-blue domes.

Enjoy a cable car ride up to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias. From this area you’ll almost have a bird’s eye view. The vantage point is breathtaking. You'll want to take plenty of pictures and videos while in the traditional village of Oia. The beautiful blue and white buildings clinging to the cliffs make for memorable photos that will amaze your friends and family.

Don't forget to sample some of the delicious local food and wine! There are plenty of places to eat all around Santorini. In the morning, you can stop by one of the local bakeries for a quick pastry and coffee. A Bougasta is a wonderful choice for a morning treat. For lunch, try a Gyro from one of the street vendors. Gyros are pita bread filled with meat, vegetables, and of course tzatziki sauce. And for dinner, there are plenty of restaurants with fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. Be sure to choose a wine that will pair well with your dinner too. Santorini has so many food options you will have trouble choosing just one. But don't forget to save room for dessert!
