Often known as the “Venice of the Orient”, the historic city Suzhou is located at the heart of the Yangtze Delta in the south of the Jiangsu Province. Beautiful stone bridges, pagodas, and classical gardens line the canals that cover 42% of the city. With over 2500 years of history, Suzhou is a well-preserved city with a lingering charm reminiscent of its rich past.
Its nine classical gardens (dating from the 9th to 11th century) are among the most famous in China and are regarded as the masterpieces of the genre. They were inscribed in 1997 as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The meticulous design of these gardens represents the deep metaphysical significance of natural beauty in Chinese culture.
