As the capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing is considered the nation’s center of government, economic, cultural, and international affairs. Having served as the capital for five dynasties, this ancient city is filled with a rich cultural heritage and centuries-old historic sites.

Though it has undergone an urban renewal in recent years, it still maintains its imperial splendor. Today, Beijing is a bustling metropolis in northeastern China, and the place over 13 million residents call home. It also plays a vital role as a transportation hub to the rest of the country.

Beijing is home to some of the most renowned historic attractions in China, including the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square.  In 2008, it opened its doors to the international community as the host of the Olympic Winter Games.  In preparation for the competitions, the city presented one of the most spectacular opening and closing ceremonies in Olympic history. It also constructed the two new dazzling venues, the Beijing National Stadium (“Bird’s Nest”) and the Beijing National Aquatics Center (“Water Cube”).
