Attraction Details

Nanjing Road

China’s premier shopping street, 3.4 mile-long (6 km) Nanjing Road, connects the Bund in the east to the People’s Square in the west. Located in the heart of the city, it attracts shoppers from around the world with a penchant for style and high fashion. It is flanked with hundreds of shopping centers, brand name stores, and specialty shops selling fine silk goods, embroidery, and jade.

After the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai was transformed into a treaty port. Nanjing Road then became the first British Concession, then the International Settlement. Once it began importing large quantities of foreign goods, it became one of the first shopping streets in the city. Nanjing Road also offers entertainment for night dwellers alike with its open-air bars, street musicians, and swanky restaurants. Today, this thriving commercial hub offers a modern urban view of the city of Shanghai.
