Qianmen Street

Over 500 years ago, Qianmen Street was a commercial and entertainment hub due to its convenient location, connecting the Imperial Palace with other communities in Beijing. In the run-up to the 2008 Olympics, the street underwent a rejuvenation to restore the streetscape to that of the early 20th century. The aim of the project was to breathe new life into the pedestrian street by bringing back traditional old-world architecture and improve the living conditions for residents.

Today, you can hop on a trolley to tour the area and visit some of its landmark structures that were also restored, including Zhengyangmen Bridge, Guanghe “Zha Building”, or Wupai Building. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll along Beijing’s second pedestrian-only street, and visit one of the dozens of traditional shops that were renovated on their original sites.
