The Great Wall is a massive defensive structure built to keep intruders from invading the mainland. It stretches an impossible 4000 miles across China's north, covering nine provinces. An enormous undertaking that originally began under Qin Shi Huang (first emperor of China) in 200 B.C., the Great Wall was not completed until the Ming Dynasty in 1640. This morning you have plenty of time to walk along its ancient path and experience part of China's fascinating history.
Today, we start our Beijing Capital tour with Qianmen Street. A visit to Tiananmen Square, the world-famous and historic Tiananmen Square, or “Gate of Heavenly Peace”. Located in the heart of Beijing, Tiananmen Square was once the main gate to the Imperial Palace during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Today, it is home to the Monument to the People’s Heroes, Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, National Museum of China, and the Great Hall of the People. Afterwards, we drive by the famed Olympic Site and have a photo stop at the Olympic National Stadium (the Bird's Nest), Olympic National Aquatics Center (the Water Cube) and the Beijing National Indoor Stadium. In the afternoon, you have the opportunity to explore the home to Ming and Qing emperors, Forbidden City. Comprised of 800 buildings covering 720,000 sq. meters, it is the world's largest palace complex.

Just returned from one of our most exciting, entertaining and inspiring vacations ever. The entire package was far above what we expected for the price. The flights were well planned and all were on time. The hotels were all 5 star, and the cruise ship Anna was close as you can come to 5 star for a ship. All of the hotel food was delicious and there was plenty for everyone. The excursions in every city visited were well thought out and very interesting, as well as entertaining. The guides in all the cities were very good, especially Nina, in Beijing, who went above and beyond her job. She was very knowledgeable and very understanding. Richard our guide on the cruise was a darling. He was not only caring about the ones of us that had to move a little slow, but also kept the remaining tourists from feeling they had to miss anything. He also was very knowledgeable about the facts on the sites visited. Jesse was good, had his facts about China, but was not as patient. James, our guide in Shanghai, was very knowledgeable about all of the sights we visited in Shanghai and Suzhou. He was very patient, taking us to places he felt we might be interested in seeing, or knowing about. The restaurants on the schedule were all fantastic, with plenty of fabulous food. The trip was a delight for our entire family of eight. We met lots of friendly people from all across the USA, and abroad. This has been the vacation we will all treasure, and definitely call "Our Trip Of A Lifetime." Thanks so much Affordable World, and we will definitely refer you, and also use you again.More Less
The whole trip was above and beyond what I had expected. The hotels where 5 stars the river cruise 4 stars and the guides two were 5 star and one was 3 star. Never had any problems, we couldn't believe what we got for the money. Would definitely recommend Affordable World and I have to my friends!More Less
The hotels were 1st class and in great locations. Guides were informative and helpful. All of the "don't miss" excursions were great. The most beautiful scenery was the trip to Tribe of the three Gorges on the cruise. There is a lot of walking on uneven ground and up and down steps. A few people in our group weren't able to go everywhere because of physical restrictions. Shopping time is limited, so be prepared to haggle and make quick decisions. The only negative was a delay in picking us up in Yichang when we arrived for the cruise. Apparently there was an accident, but we had no idea what was happening. We should have been given a message upon arrival.More Less
The hotel accommodations were great especially the breakfast. The tour guides spoke very good English and were easy to understand. The optional tours were good and highlighted the main tourist attractions. I disagree with the recommendation to upgrade on the Yanghtze River Cruise. The food service and selection was broader than upstairs (the upgraded section), there was less rocking/movement, and the elevator did not always work, so one had to climb two flights of stairs to reach the upgraded section. There was no tour guide for the cruise so there was some initial confusion as to what optional tours were included in the pre-booking (there were 6 optional tours - pre-booking included 3 but you didn't know which tours unless you asked the reception). What I did NOT appreciate about the entire trip was being told by the Beijing and Shanghai (Vivian) tour guides to tip them and the drivers and how much to tip. While tips are not mandatory and is to reflect the appreciation for services rendered, these two tour guides made it very clear, tipping was expected, how much to tip per person, and when they expected to collect the money. The Xian (Casey)and Hong Kong tour guides never once asked for their tip. It was nice and I rewarded them monetarily for not requesting the tip. The Hong Kong tour guide was the BEST tour guide I have ever had. He was funny, had a wealth of knowledge, and shared his photography skills. We extended our time in Hong Kong at a different hotel when the tour ended. The Hong Kong Tour guide took the time to leave us a friendly reminder message at our new hotel for our airport pick up time. That was very nice and made left a lasting, positive impression.More Less
I really enjoyed this trip! Prior to the trip, Affordable World was prompt in answering questions posted to their website and helpful when called on the phone. Their Visa application was easy. The email and snail mail communication before the trip were excellent. Everything throughout the trip was well planned and organized. Scott, our guide in Beijing, was truly outstanding!!! All hotel accommodations were wonderful! The buffet breakfasts were great too! The rest of the food was only ok. They could use some improvement. I do not think we needed a guide on the river cruise. Overall, I thought this trip was very fun and eye-opening! I would recommend this trip and the travel company!More Less
We recently returned from the Majestic China & Yangtse River, via Affordable World, and it was tremendous! As a well-seasoned traveler, we were very apprehensive taking a vacation where we had to release full control, but Affordable World was spot-on with their organization. We never had to look for our Affordable World contact, whether at the airport, hotel or excursion site. They were timely, informative and courteous. We went with Affordable World because they were the tour company offered on our Groupon (even more savings!). There are only two negatives regarding our experience: First, with every hotel room and on our cruise we had separate beds. All the couples we traveled with had separate beds, and when they/we tried to correct this it ended up being a huge hassle. Second, the cruise was 5 days, which ended up being 3 days too long. There is absolutely nothing to do on the ship (it's not at all like the bigger cruise ships where entertainment and food are 24/7), and other than the excursions, there is nothing to do in the ports. We found ourselves very bored the last couple of days and couldn't wait to get off. Other than that, it was a great adventure!More Less
I have recently returned from the Affordable World Majestic China & Yangtze River 14 Days 12 Nights tour. This is the first tour I have ever been on and I took a chance on Affordable World, mostly because of price and what was offered. The trip was superb and unfolded without one glitch. All the Air China flights were excellent, the Victoria Grace cruise on the Yantgze River was stunning and informative, the tour guides were all knowledgeable, enthusiastic and had very good English. The food was fair to outstanding with most of it very very good. It was served as extensive buffets or Dim Sum style (lazy susan with dishes brought to you). All accommodations were beyond what I expected, staff incredible, and China herself, an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend Affordable World tours to one and all. My only "negative?" I scheduled too many optional excursions and could have used a bit more down time. I slept for two days straight when I got home.More Less
I have just returned from the 14 days Majestic China and Yangtze River, everything was great, I recommend to upgrade to the executive level at the CRUISE, if you do so, you have the chance to have a four pie e alunar y every day at the CRUISE, and all your meals at the uper deck, I also recommend to take the two optional tours that you have to pay at the ship to the Tribe of the three gorges and to the White Emperor City, the guides were so nice and kind. The hotels great, only the hotel in SHANGHAI Renassaince Yangtze is far from downtown, so you have to take a taxi, when there Other Renassaince hotel near the Garten. I'm sure take another tour with Affordable World. Thank youMore Less
