Your vacation begins with an international flight to Taipei, Taiwan’s vibrant capital, set at the northern tip of the mountainous island. Basking in the Pacific Ocean, this subtropical land is known for its high-energy cities, lush scenery, and ornate temples.

On arrival at Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport, enjoy a convenient transfer to your Taipei hotel, experiencing your first glimpses of the city’s bustling streets and skyscrapers en route. After checking in for two nights, spend the remainder of the day as you want. Perhaps recharge your batteries in the comfort of your hotel or set off to enjoy Taipei’s shops and restaurants independently. Taipei

Relax over breakfast before a fascinating half-day tour of Taipei city. Soak in the atmosphere of this fast-moving metropolis and gaze at the gleaming towers, smart shops, historical temples, and colorful markets as you travel between the sights. Visit the National Palace Museum to admire its displays of Chinese antiquities, and see the imposing Chiang Kai-shek Memorial and Martyr’s Shrine. With your tour over, enjoy the afternoon free to stroll, shop, or sightsee as you wish. This evening, you may want to join our optional Taipei by Night tour, visiting the Hwahsi night market and Taipei 101, the world’s second-highest building, before sitting down to a dinner of delicious Din Tai Fung dumplings.

DAY 4

Taipei - Sun Moon Lake

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to Sun Moon Lake, the island’s biggest lake, set at 762 meters above sea level in Taiwan’s central mountains. Admire the mirror-glass waters and visit the elaborately carved Wenwu Temple, also known as the ‘Literature-Warrior Temple,’ which consists of shrines to Confucius, the God of Literature, and the God of War, among other deities. After exploring the magnificent lake on a panoramic tour, check in at your hotel, prettily situated on its wooded northern shores. Then, enjoy the rest of the day to bathe in the hotel’s hydrotherapy hot springs or explore local walking trails, go biking, or take a boat ride on the lake.

DAY 5

Sun Moon Lake-Fo Guang Shan Monastery-Kaohsiung

Today is all about experiencing southern Taiwan’s natural landscapes and historical highlights. After checking out from your hotel, pass through the mountain town of Jiji and its charming old railway station en route to the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, the largest and most revered of Taiwan’s Buddhist monasteries. Here, learn about the local Buddhist religion and talk to monks or nuns as you tour the Buddha Museum, a complex of eight pagodas and gardens crowned by a vast figure of Buddha—the world’s tallest bronze sitting Buddha statue. Take the opportunity to have a Buddhist vegetarian lunch* here before continuing to Kaohsiung on the south coast—the island’s second-largest city. This evening, admire Kaohsiung’s Love River and browse the neon-lit stalls of Liuhe Night Market before retiring to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 6

Kaohsiung - Kenting - Zhihben,Taitung

Depart Kaohsiung after breakfast for your journey to Kenting National Park, situated at Taiwan’s southern tip, and known for its wooded mountains and china-white beaches, the latter overlooking 37 miles of coral-reef-studded seas. Follow a scenic route along the coast, stopping at the beauty spots of Eluanbi Lighthouse, the Maobitou coastal area, and Longpan Park. Next, travel to the lovely east-coast town of Taitung via the Southern Link Highway for an overnight stay at Zhihben, and the chance to bathe in the natural hot spring at the Hotel Royal Chihpen.

DAY 7

Taitung-East Coast National Scenic Area-Hualien

Look forward to a highpoint of your Taiwan explorations today—a journey along the rugged east coast. Have your camera ready as you travel through the East Coast National Scenic Area, which extends for over 100 miles, and is characterized by craggy landscapes, pebble beaches, caves, shoreline reefs, and wave-sculpted capes. Along the way, see the sandstone rock formations at Xiaoyeliu, the arched bridge at Sanxiantai, the Shitiping Stone Steps, and a marble factory and showroom. As the afternoon draws to a close, continue to Hualien for an overnight stay in Taroko National Park, home to the phenomenal Taroko Gorge.

DAY 8

Hualien - Taroko National Park - Taipei

After breakfast, delve into Taroko National Park to visit the Taroko Gorge—Taiwan’s breathtakingly beautiful, steep-sided ravine formed by the Liwu River. Enjoy a guided trip around the park’s must-sees: following a road carved into the marble cliffs that rise high over the tumbling river, whose waters have formed the ravine over the millennia. Pass the Tunnel of Nine Turns and Cimu Bridge, and call at the Swallow Grotto and Changchun Temple, also called the ‘Eternal Spring Shrine,’ before continuing the drive back to Taipei. Along the way, stop for photos of Taiwan’s highest coastal cliffs at Cingshui and drive through one of the world’s longest underground tunnels—the Syue-Shan Long Tunnel—a marvel of engineering that took 14 years to complete—before arriving in the capital in the early evening.
