DAY 3

Hanoi

Vietnam’s second largest city, Hanoi has been occupied by the French, Chinese and Japanese through its 1,000-year history and boasts tree-lined boulevards, busy markets and colonial buildings that all demand exploration. Today, visit the Ho Chi Minh Memorial to see Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, and peer into the Stilt House where the revered Vietnamese spiritual leader lived from 1958 to 1969. Other must-sees include the 11th-century One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature and the Museum of Ethnology. Continue your afternoon in Hanoi with an exploration of the old quarter before heading back to the hotel for an evening at leisure. Alternatively, you may want to immerse yourself in north Vietnamese folk culture with our optional Water Puppet Show and Dinner experience. Visit Hanoi’s Water Puppet Theatre to watch a colorful show of traditional puppets acting out scenes on a pool of water as a stage. DAY 6

Ho Chi Minh City

Enjoy the morning free at leisure or join our optional tour to the Cu Chi tunnels. Covering almost 250 km in length, the Cu Chi tunnels were shelter to over 16,000 Viet Cong guerrillas during the wars.  The network of tunnels served as communication routes, storage facilities, hospitals and living quarters for Vietnamese fighters throughout the war.  After exploring the tunnels, return to the city center for lunch before we embark on our city sightseeing tour.   Conquered by the French in the 19th century, this intoxicating city still sports boulevards and grand European buildings — colonial vestiges that contrast starkly with its now predominantly Buddhist culture and booming capitalist-driven economy. Today, our guided tour of the historic center showcases the colonial area with visits to the Old Saigon Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral*. Afterwards, visit the Chinese district and the Thien Hau Pagoda before returning back to the hotel.

DAY 7

Ho Chi Minh City

Today is yours to do as you wish: perhaps souvenir-shopping in Ho Chi Minh’s Ben Thanh Market, exploring the city’s poignant War Remnants Museum, or enjoying its enticing bars and restaurants. Alternatively, take our optional excursion to the Mekong Delta: a maze of islands and waterways lined with stilted villages, rice paddies, and fruit farms that forms the agricultural heartland of south Vietnam. After driving to the delta’s Ben Tre province, ride a motorboat to a coconut workshop, brick kiln, and homes where families hand-weave sleeping mats. Then, savor fresh fruits and green tea at a local house before riding a bike or motorized cart around rice fields, villages, and farms. Following a typical delta lunch at a family home, glide along narrow canals by hand-rowed boat to visit a rice-making workshop and historical house. Wrap up your day with a transfer back to your Ho Chi Minh hotel where you can spend the evening at leisure, or join our optional farewell Saigon River dinner cruise—admiring the city lights from the water over a delicious buffet meal.
